I am buying a used car. I am on worker's comp, so my credit doesn't matter, it is the same as not having a job, so no one would finance me. I found this place that didn't even run my credit. they will finance ANYONE. they have a security system put into your car, like lojak or something, and if I don't make my payment on time, they can access it through there computer and shut it down so it doesn't work till I make the payment. what the h**l is this, and how does it work? couldn't I just disconnect it when I get the car on monday? or even hook it up on a different car?

  1. It's NOT a remote control device.

It's called a starter interrupter. It's installed on the dash on the car you are buying. It can't be removed without disabling the car.

It requires that you enter a number code each time you make a payment. The dealer will give you a new code after each payment. If you are on a weekly payment plan, the device will shut off the car if the new code hasn't been entered a week after the last payment. If you miss a payment or two the dealer will repossess the car.

  2. It is securely interfaced with the cars computer.  Try to remove it, and your car will not start.

Take the car away from the cell phone system that it uses to communicate for an extended period of time - and it will stop.

The car is not really yours until you have clear title to it.

The contract will clearly state that if there is any tampering with the system, you will forfeit the car, and be liable for towing charges (always jacked way up).

There have been problems with these systems - turning off cars when the payment was made on time, but not recorded in the computer in a timely manner.  The contract will state what if any recourse you have (usually none).

These places will make sure that you are never upside down on the car, so they are carry very little risk.

  3. No, you can't disconnect it.  It is a great system for high risk people.  It really makes you pay, but it does have it's problems.  Save up a couple hundred bucks and buy a beater to get you around until you get yourself back on track.
