How does tire tread wear down?

Does it disappear is an intriguing question. Consider the huge number of tires that have passed through one of the Hudson River's tunnels; Shouldn't there be tons of rubber left behind in them or in their ventilation systems?

As the tire rotates ( or hits ) the pavement, a little bit of it stays on the pavement. Thus wearing down the tread.
