  1. Steps In Transcription [Briefly]

    DNA unwinds.

RNA polymerase recognizes a specific base sequence in the DNA called a promoter and binds to it. The promoter identifies the start of a gene, which strand is to be copied, and the direction that it is to be copied.

Complementary bases are assembled (U instead of T).

A termination code in the DNA indicates where transcription will stop.

The mRNA produced is called a mRNA transcript.

  2. this is when the information on a portion of DNA is transcribed into an mRNA molecule.

introns are the parts of the DNA that dont appear in teh final strand of the mRNA, while exons are the parts that do

    transcription occurs in the nucleus

    there are 3 main steps:

    1. the enzyme helicase unqwinds the DNA strands

    2. RNA nucleotides pair with complementary nucelotides on only one DNA strand (remember uracil replaces thymine)

    3. RNA polymerase joins the RNA nucleotides together...and you have a single stranded mRNA molecule that has been formed

now the 2 DNA strands rejoin

then the mRNA molecule leaves the nucleus for translation........
