Question:

How does transferring out of state from a community college work?

I'm at a community college in Illinois and have a 3.9 GPA. I am involved in clubs and volunteer work outside of school, and I also work part time. I think overall I am a very qualified student but transferring out of state is difficult. UCLA, for example, takes 4% out of state transfer students that apply.

That is an extreme, but with statistics like that I am worried that I can't get into some of the best highly selective schools.

Some of the schools I'm interested in include:

- Washington University in St. Louis

- University of Virginia

- Michigan University

- Northwestern University (this is in Illinois but it is private so it makes no difference)

- Wisconsin University

- Boston University

- Brandeis University

- University of British Columbia (Canada)

- McGill University (Canada)

Basically, what I'm asking is -- Am I crazy?? Is there no way I can get in to these schools?

  1. Rather than any of us speculating, the thing for you to do is apply at the schools you want to go to and see what happens.

Please be advised that which of your current classes will be accepted as transfer credit will vary depending on school and degree program.
