The diaphragm muscle increases the volume within the thoracic cavity, forcing air to be sucked into the lungs.  Air passes through a series of passageways to the tips of the bronchial tree.  Here, the process of gas exchange occurs in the alveoli by passive diffusion of gases between the alveolar gas and the blood passing by in the lung capillaries.
