  1. ok

the only thing you can do at that point is pull back and say whooaa!!

however you can do things to prevent it from happening again.

when he does it and you get him to a stop make him back up preferably all the way to the point where he took off.. that might take a while.. point is make him back up A LOT! and don't be nice about it make him back up at a good speed.. that doesn't mean yank his throat out.... lean back, kick, and don't keep constant pressure on the reins use repetitive jerking motion... not too hard...

when you've backed up to the point where you think he gets it.. start over.

come to a complete stop! sit for a while.. like 5 minutes.. let him cool off a little.. pet his neck.. and start SLOWLY and GENTLY! lightly squeeze with your calves and click him on.. sloooowllyyy.. make him walk the rest the way home!

also! since he is higher strung don't lope/canter every time you ride! keep it at a walk/sloow trot. canter maybe every 3rd time you ride! he HAS to know for the safety of you, him, and whoever/whatever is around.. that he has to go slow.. that not every time you ride he gets to go fast!

    hope this helps!

  2. Simple solution.  Don't ride next to a road!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Firstly I must say that you are very silly to have been riding him bareback so close to the road, it is dangerous and you are lucky yuo weren't seriously hurt.

Secondly, when people say turn the horse, they don't mean turn him in a tight circle - of course that is dangerous, you need to start turning him and he will naturally slow down.  As he slows you can then turn the circle tighter.

The final thing you need to do, by the sounds of it, is to have some retraining sessions.  He may well just be taking the mickey out of you because he knows you can't handle him.  Get someone else to ride him and see if he does the same thing.

By the way, you say he is an ex-racehorse, so you need to ride him like one!  It may be that his racing training kicked in and he didn't understand what you were asking him to do.  If you watch jockeys, when they want a horse to slow down they drop their hands low and pull back very gently.  If you had your hands up in the air and were pulling hard on his mouth you probably confused him.

You need to do something, and soon, or one, or both of you, is going to get seriously hurt.
