  1. think of it like this pintch your nose and breath through a straw kinda hard then pintch your nose and breath through a paper towel roll witch is easier. same for an engine it breaths through the intake and exhaust the better and free flowing intake and exhaust you have the better the car will run.

  2. Needing bigger exhaust is a result of adding more intake. You must be able to exhaust faster when you increase the intake. Simply put.

  3. exhaust is like the exhale of an athlete. the air intake is like the air taken in by an athlete.

the bigger either of these are, the more air can come in and go out, meaning more power can be produced. these are your cars lungs.

wider exhaust allows the dirty air to escape faster, in turn allowing fresh air in faster.

  4. The exhaust system allows the car to expell more gasses (a gas engine is basically one large air pump powered by an explosive fuel) - therefore a larger exhaust system will allow the engine to expell more exhaust gasses.

To a certain extent having a larger diameter exhaust will increase the flow of the exhaust gasses, but your engine needs some back-pressure in order to provide low rpm torque. If you put on a set of high flow headers and keep the rest of the factory exhaust the gasses will only be able to flow as fast as the narrowest section of the system will allow (any system is only as strong as it's weakest part).

If you have an exhaust system that is wider than the stock factory system you will gain more high rpm power, but you will also loose some of the low range torque.
