  1. In our body, most bones are "living" in the sense that they can change and are constantly maintained by two groups of cells: "osteoblasts" lay down new bone, while "osteoclasts" can remove bone by dissolving it.

This is why when someone breaks a leg, the doctor will put a cast around the broken leg.  Over time (usually 3-4 months), osteoblasts will enter the gap between the broken pieces, and "connect" the two by laying down new bone in the gap.  This new bone may be somewhat wider than the pieces, but slowly, osteoclasts and osteoblasts continue to modify the bone through a process called "remodelling".  Once finished, one can hardly tell where the old bone ends and where the new bone begins.

Brain surgery is a little different in that the surgeons cannot put a cast around someone's head.  So they secure the cut-out piece (called a bone flap) to the rest of the skull with titanium plates and screws.  http://www.sd-neurosurgeon.com/practice/...

However, over time, the same healing process will take place, and slowly osteoblasts and osteoclasts will fill the gap with new bone, and after a few months, the skull bone will be one-piece again.
