  1. safe following distance should be 1 car length back during bad weather you should extend that to 2 or 3 car lengths and when you are a t a stop you should be able to see the front drivers rear tires on the pavement. the person behind you, you should be able to see his front license plate (if he has one)

tailgating does not allow a person to stop at a safe distance from the person in front and can cause a multiple car accident

  2. I live in Texas, and the safe following distance that they taught us was 3 seconds. So, to find this, the car in front of you, lets say, passes under a bridge. When he passes under, start counting seconds...1,2,3...and then you should hit that same spot that you started counting for the other driver when you hit 3.

With weather, you should lengthen your stopping distance to 4-5 seconds. Because weather has a negative effect on stopping distance and reaction time.

Tailgating is a dangerous driving practice. Tailgating does not allow the driver a safe amount of time to stop in case of an emergency.

  3. You should increase your following distance when driving in bad weather, heavy traffic or when exiting an expressway because your stopping distance will be greater.

Increase your following distance if you are being tailgated in the event that you need to either slow down or pull over.

Remember, the three-second rule applies only in good weather and depends on the condition of your vehicle and the road. In bad weather conditions, heavy traffic, poor pavement or if your vehicle is in poor condition, add extra seconds to the three second rule..................
