How early can you place bets for the Kentucky Derby?

Same day? Week of? After the field/betting lines are set? I'm asking because I wont be around on Saturday May, 3 2008 for the actual race, but would like to place a bet early if I could.

Hello,

The Daily Racing Form will give you much insight on where you can go to place early bets.  Plus they have information from a good choice of racing enthusiasts as well as picks for the favorite to win a particular race.

You could also go online to the Washington Post Newpaper and take a look a Andrew Beyers column. He has been a top horse racing handicapper for years and has a very good track record for picking winners in case you didn't know.

I, however, like to simplify my picks as much as possible. What I do is bet on horses to "show" instead of "win". I also use an online site. You can do a search of online betting sites that will allow you to place an early bet. Just make sure that it's an American site if you live in the United States. Congress passed a law banning joing over seas betting sites because they didn't report your earnings.  I don't bet to win, I bet to show because it allows me to actually make really good returns whenever I go to the track. I consistenly turn $15-$20 dollars into any where from $150-$300 easily. Thats with about maybe twenty minutes wortth of work looking at the racing form paper of the particular track I'm betting on. These aren't large sums I know, but I have a 89-90% success rate at the track.

I would call the OTB in your area. I live in New York, a few years ago  I made my Derby bets the day before thre race.
