How easily do cartilage piercings get infected?

I really want to get mine pierced but I'm also really hesitant.

When I got my lobes pierced they got pretty infected and now they itch whenever I wear earings.

Also I heard you could totally destroy your cartilage if it got infected.

  1. they get infected pretty easily for many different reasons. the best way to keep it from getting infected is to clean it with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide daily. and do NOT sleep on it.

as for the itching, try sensitive solution earrings

  2. It depends. Some people can get their cartilage pierced without any problems but have reccuring issues with their lobes. It also depends on the jewelry. At one time, gold was considered best for ears, but gold jewelry has been found to be easily scratched and can breed bacteria. If you take care of your ears, and your earrings, as long as you are not allergic to the jewelry, you should be fine. As for destroying your cartilage, I am unsure about that, but when I got mine pierced, it just never healed. I now have a tiny scar and bump. It all really depends. But just so you know, it is a big responsibility. For some people, you have to clean your ears every day no matter what. Others, after it is done healing, they never have any problems. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you want to get your cartilage pierced, go for it. The worst that can happen is it gets infected. If so DO NOT take the earring out. Go back to the place where you got it and ask them for help and advice. Otherwise, you trap the infection inside. I say go for it, and good luck :-)

  3. Yeah my cartilage got infected for a couple days, it only was irritated because I slept on it. I definitely would still get it though, it looks great but I agree with the other answer, do not buy the cheap jewelry, it can infect your cartilage very quick!!

  4. Cartilage takes a long time to heal. Thats why knees with torn cartilage takes so long. Avoid using a piercing gun. It will shatter the cartilage. I have done it both ways and i find a needle is better. It did get infected and it hurt like crazy. but it healed faster than the gun. Use good quality earrings, not the cheap stuff thats why your ears itch. if the infection gets to bad it will scar and deform your ears but you have to be careful with the holes.  good luck
