I'm a teacher interested in going back to grad school for library and information science. I've looked at schools here in the U.S. but am seriously considering going to Canada since I've always wanted to study there and love the country (I lived in Toronto for six months many years ago) The schools that offer the program I want are in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. (a few others but those are the cities that call to me). How difficult is it for an American student to get into a grad program in Canada? Would there be a lot of competition? How about in terms of visa..etc? Can a foreign student work there while going to school? Thank you.

  1. Just as in the States, the ease/difficulty depends upon the school in which you're applying.  That said, most schools hold seats for "international students", which would put you in a pretty good position. Although designed specifically for high school graduates, the website below will provide you with a high level roadmap in regards to financial aid, on and off-campus work policies, and what you need in terms of legal documentation. There's even a suggested packing list (woot)! If I were making the choice, I would shoot for Montreal for the international fabric of the city, the nightlife and their annual festivals. On the flip side, my son is a third-year under-graduate student at a university in the Maritime Provinces and absolutely loves his school, the spirit of community and everyone's deep appreciation for music. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck.
