How easy is it to be prescribed anti depressives?

I have clinical depression, unipolar, and i'm not wanting therapy whatsoever. I do not want to see a therapist as it would then involve my parents and boyfriend. I was thinking of asking for antidepressives for it so it wasnt noticable by anyone.

Can i get them from a gp? Or do i need therapy first?

What are the common side-effects for women?

  1. i found(in Uk) that they are preferring to have you take therapy although each case is different.

tell the doc everything and don't worry about others quite so much, its you that needs attention right now.

  2. You will need to go to the doctor (gp) and if they diagnose you as having depression ,they will probably prescribe an anti-depressant. You should also think about talking to a therapist so that you can work through whatever has gotten you depressed.

  3. You will not be able to get prescription medication without your parents being brought into it (I take it you are under 18).

You can talk to a counselor at some centers or even your school for free, and they won't tell your parents. The only time they would tell your parents are if you threatened to kill yourself or hurt someone else. Otherwise it's all confidential.

But why do you feel the need to hide it from everyone? I can tell you from experience that all you're doing is making it harder on yourself. I hid my problems for 7 years until I finally had a major breakdown and was diagnosed as bipolar. And when I look back on all those years that I refused to let people help me, it seems like such a shame.

Try talking to a counselor. Popping a pill isn't going to make all your problems go away anyway. Medication is ONE step in recovering from depression, but without therapy or at least a good support group of friends and family, it isn't going to do you much good.

  4. All antidepressants have side effects and are or will make your anxiety disorder worse  when you stop them. Here's why:

Antidepressants actually block or eliminate your body's neurotransmitters and "trick" your brain into thinking that the levels are high when they are not. In depressed and anxious people, their levels of neurotransmitters (seratonin, dopamine, etc) are often too low due to either stress, poor nutrition, etc. Taking medications often eliminates the neurotransmitters altogether and causes one to become dependent on them (when they stop, they are more depressed than before).

Anyone who tells you otherwise is misinformed or trying to make money off of you. (your doctor)

My DO (doctor who treats the entire body, not just the symptoms) has put me on amino acids, Neuroreplete, which help to stimulate your brain to produce more neurotransmitters. I am told is 100% safe and effective and is all natural. There are NO side effects. That, coupled with cognitive-behavioral therapy can completely eliminate depression and anxiety, including a number of other mental health issues.

If you choose the natural and safe route, I would advise against stopping your medication until a DO can taper you off gradually. Look in the phone book for a DO or online. Good luck!

  5. G.P will give them out no prob. these days. Don't worry about seeing a psychiatrist though, they just want to hear symptoms and could care less what you have gone through. If you're that scared of your parents and b.f it probaly is the root cause anyway. Find some new people. Understanding people.
