How easy is it to breed corn snakes?

Me and my friend both have corn snakes, mine is a charcoal and his is a candy cane. We thought that if we bred them we could make some of the money back that we paid for them. What colour morph would we end up with and how much would it sell for? Also would it be easy to breed them?

  1. corn snakes are very easy to breed and it has been proven that winter brumation(a period of reduced activity, light and temperatures) is not even neededt o breed corn snakes successfully.

you would probably get all charcle babies het for candycan(e.g. they look charcole but carry the candy cane gene).

the babies would not sell for much. generally only $15-$25 as everyone breeds corn snakes these days

  2. It's rather late in the year to be breeding now.  It's also important that the female is of appropriate size and weight before breeding her.  You may or may not want to brumate, but this needs to be done later in the year.  I usually brumate around Thanksgiving in November and bring them out in February.  It's easy enough to breed them. Once they come out of brumation, are feeding properly and have had their post brumation shed, you can introduce them to each other. I usually put the female and male in a plastic tub sprayed lightly with a bit of water.  Once they've bred and separated, I return them to their own enclosures. I introduce every 3 days or so. I've had better fertility doing it this way as it allows the males to replenish sperm. The big question is what are you going to do with all the babies.  Potentially you could have 17-30 eggs.  Each baby will need it's own tub, and will have to be fed every 4-5 days.  If you breed a charcoal to a candy cane (basically an amel), you will get: Normals  het for blizzard.  Probably could get $25-$30 for each depending upon how nice they look and whether or not they are male or female.  How will you sell them?  How will you ship them if someone not in your area wants one?  Are you certified with Fed Ex-the only carrier besides Delta Dash that accepts snakes?  Are you just going to dump them in some pet shop without any thought as to how they'll be cared for or who will get them?  It's easy to breed them and incubate them...it's not always easy to sell them.  You have an obligation to the animals to make sure you have an existing market for the ones you are going to produce.

  3. You won't find out what color morphs you're going to get until the eggs hatch. Corn snakes typically don't sell for much. You may get anywhere between $20 and $80 depending on who you're selling it to, probably closer to the lower price. It is very easy to breed corns. The sure fire way is to brumate or hibernate them during the winter. You drop their temperature to around 50 degrees for three months and stop feeding them 2 weeks before you brumate them. You then bring them out by warming the cage slowly and feeding them often. After their first shed, you can put them in the same cage and they should breed. one to two months later the eggs should be laid.  You can also just put them together. They may not have a successful mate but it is possible to breed w/out brumation. Just do some research online or at the library
