From the photos I have seen, the city appears to occupy several levels. How can I make a day trip as easy as possible for a senior citizen, are there shutlle buses perhaps or plentiful taxi cabs to hail´. Any help appreciated.

  1. As I remember there were many hills and climbs.  You might want to map out your route ahead of time and then take buses.

  2. J'aime le Pois is mainly right, Quebec City is very hilly...although taxis won't be hard to find during the summer in the Old Town or even downtown. What is also new this year is that the RTC (Bus Transit System - http://www.rtcquebec.ca/francais/new_cus... will have small free electric shuttle buses going around the Old Town (http://www.rtcquebec.ca/francais/nos_ser...

Coming from the airport or the train/bus station, you won't have any difficulties finding a taxi, so do not worry.

  3. You're right- it's really hilly, especially in the Old Town (the touristy area). Some of the paths up to the forts or in the parks are unpaved, so that would also be difficult for your friend. A lot of the Old Town streets are cobbled, but most have decent sidewalks.

Maybe you could get a wheelchair for the day-? (If you want a good workout)

The downtown/ city center area seems a bit more flat/ accessible, but doesn't have all the cool historical buildings.

You could probably find a taxi if you're in a busier area, but I wouldn't say they are plentiful... It might be smart to have some phone numbers of a few taxi companies so you could call one when you need it.

There's a public transit system of buses that covers the whole city.

This article is helpful, esp. the "Get Around" section: http://wikitravel.org/en/Quebec_City

Here's a more links on transportation, note the phone numbers for the taxis: http://www.telegraphe.com/transports/ind...

It's a really beautiful, romantic city, though it is not very accessible for those with walking difficulties. I hope you find a way to work it out.
