How easy is it to start a non profit organization?

have a good idea for one just wondering, can i get governmet grants to start it?

  1. A lot of it depends on the state you live in.  First, you must incorporate as a non-profit corporation in your state.  For details on that, visit your state's Secretary of State website.  If you want to get donations and have them be tax deductible for the donors, you would have to apply for and qualify for Section 501(c)(3) status.  This is a section of the Internal Revenue Service Code.  For information on that, see the IRS web site at http://www.irs.gov/publications/p557/ch0...

    Then you have all the normal business stuff, plus all the non-profit reporting and accountability - are you SURE you want to do this??

    If you do want to go ahead, I would suggest consulting and good corporate attorney and a good accountant.
