  1. yes they do

  2. Having been caught dumping waste into the sea the carnival corp was fined a few 100 million dollars and was told to instigate a comprehensive enviromental program on all its ships (that includes all the owned companies such as P&O. Princess, Holland America Line, Costa etc etc etc)

So from this rather ignoble beginning carnivals enviromental philosophy was created, and to be fair it ranks amongst the most comprehensive and stringent in the world

I cant speak for the Carnival ships but i know Holland America, P&O and Princess have the very latest in waste treatment systems on their ships

These are of such a high spec that we can discharge the permeate (waste) from them alongside the glaciers in alaska - where obviously the authorities are obsessive about the environment. as an aside the WASTE water that comes out of thses systems has been proven to be cleaner than some US states tap water..... and that is what it is, very clean water - the rest of the waste is treated, broken down and sent ashore when the ship is alongside.

Sadly some states dont get further than seeing that it came from our sewage treatment system and so ban it from being discharged anywhere near their coast, ignoring the fact if we were to do so, we would actually be making their seas marginally cleaner!

As for the other waste from the engine room, that can only be discharged once the oil content has been reduced to 15 parts per MILLION, as required by legislation but i know of a few ships that have the capability to reduce this to just FIVE parts per million.

Food waste is communated (mushed up) to pieces smaller than 25mm and dropped out of the bottom of the ship in appropriate places.

Rags, wood etc is burnt in the incinerators, which themselves have means of removing any toxins in the fumes.

Recyclables - cans/bottles/plastics etc are collected and sent ashore and the money gained, in most companies, goes back to that ships 'crew fund' for parties etc

Any hazardous material is sent ashore for appropriate disposal

I could go on and on.... to answer your question cruise ships these days are obsessive about the environment - and not least carnival who was fined 100's of millions for it...

check out the last link if you want to know how seriously the main cruise operators take environmental issues

  3. It's treated, then dumped.  Pretty common practice among cruise lines.

I know Royal Caribbean has a program called Save The Waves

Save the Waves' three key principles are to:

Reduce the creation or generation of waste material

Recycle as much as possible; and

Ensure the proper disposal of any remaining waste.
