How effective are rowing machines ? ?

I am trying to lose weight and increase muscle, I have gotten a three month membership for a gym and was told that rowing machines are a good way to get a full body workout and that they are very effective for burning fat and calories, how true is this ?

I used one today for about ten minutes and it was pretty intense, it felt like i had been working out for a half hour to forty five minutes

  1. yes they are very good, i have done 2000 metres today it only took 8 mins but i felt like i had worked so hard, more than when i run, and my arms and shoulders ached and so did my bum cheeks. It is very intense especially if you keep the level high
