  1. yes it is feasible, algae convert the sunlight into oil. Since the whole organism converts sunlight into oil, algae can produce more oil in an area the size of a two-car garage than an entire football field of soybeans.

    Its pretty difficult and expensive. See the references


  2. -It is not currently economically feasible.  Will it be?  Perhaps.

    -We're not using it because they're not economically feasible.

    More research is needed to a) engineer/breed/develop algae that produce high amounts of biofuels (which may be hydrogen, ethanol, or some type of oil) b) growing practices.

    Some suggestions for good growing locations include the ocean and salt flats, since these are agronomically zero production areas anyway.
