Question:

How effective is an eye gouge in a street fight?

A guy I used to work with once told me that all you need to do to win a street fight is to take the other guy's eyeball out and run like h**l.

I'm not looking to be the next MMA champ or anything, but I would like to know the most efficient way to end a fight with minimal risk to myself. Any ideas???

  1. In a street fight?? NO!

    IN SELF DEFENSE, yes!!

  2. Forget the street fight! It doesn't matter where you are. If you are approached by someone trying to kill or do you serious bodily harm, like rape, go for the eyeballs.

If they just want money try something lesser. Learn how to protect yourself by taking a self-defense class.

Lastly, stay away from situations where you might find yourself in harm's way. Why tempt fate?

  3. Too old of a way, most would be ready for it.Try talking, just get a stun-gun.

  4. don't take his eye out! that's descusting... Just hit him right him as hard as you can in between the eyes. 1) it hurts.  2) It's a sort of pressure point, it causes your eyes to water like MAD! (Trust me. I have been hit there once and i couldn't see a thing for the next 8 minutes! you will be able to run from him and he can't see you. (you eyes water up so much it even hurts to open them.  3) it hurts.  4) it hurts for a long time...

  5. EEW! I'm sure the eyeball thing would be pretty efficient!

  6. this is not the answer dont fight at all

  7. I agree with Anti Thesis on this one. Although, I will add my two cents about the gouging. If you were to do it, use your thumb, go to the inside of the eyeball by the nose, and do it quickly. If you pop it out quickly you can rip it off and cause some severe enough trauma to put the guy in shock. Also there is what's called an oculocardiac reflex, which is immense pressure exerted straight back on the eye into the head at a rapid velocity. This causes a knockout, which is another good reason to only use your thumb and not your fingers... the thumb is much stronger.

Edit- You could always go for scratching the eye too as that takes their vision away as well.

  8. Your better of faking a head strike and landing a groin strike.. Few single attacks have the ability to end a fight as quickly as a well placed groin strike.

  9. check out http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseac... it's my street fighting team's tactical MMA blog page and actually eye gouging works just fine in a street fight as long as you use your thumb to the outside corner of your attacker's eye in a quick motion drawing from outside corner to the inside corner of the eye while pushing inward with the thumb simultaneously your hand will remain to the outside corner of their eye though while applying such a technique ( important ).

The palm strike in a upward motion to the nose though can cause both eyes of an attacker to swell up and effect his vision in both eyes rather greatly and I think I'd use this one before an actual eye gouging attempt.  <--- very old "jujitsu technique"

Check out my team's blog page man ..... I think you'll like it.  Full of useful facts.

    Good luck out there.

  10. Hmmm he may have a point, many years ago I had to defend my brother who was getting beat upon by this guy who was quite small but vicious ,I hit this guy with everything I had and even tried to pull him off my brother without success, Then I plunged my middle finger behind his eyeball ready to pluck his eye out and then he realised in horror and backed off without any reprisals ,I guess he thought I was a bigger physio than him.

I relate this not as a boast but in doing what was necessary to defend my brother at the time and it worked thank goodness.

    Best wishes :)***

  11. It works pretty well, if you can land it. It's harder than you might think. Ive put my finger in someone's eye while struggling, quite on accident. It stopped his agressive behavior quite well. It's not something I really WANT to do to someone else unless I was in extreme danger, and it's actually kind of a gross feeling when you sink your finger in. It's like...warm jello.

  12. It would stop most attackers, but it is not the easies thing to apply.

  13. I've seen a few accidental eye pokes in mma and also in basketball and other sports, and they always appear to hurt the recipient pretty badly.  I think if you did it in a self defense context it would at least back the attacker off you for a second or two and buy you time to escape.

  14. if you want to get jumped by the persons freinds

  15. If you can get him to the ground with a good throw, drive your heel into his kidney or liver, maybe a few to the leg and bolt dude. Hard to Run if you cant use ur leg, hard to fight if you trying to protect ur kidney...

  16. Eye gouges can be effective, or they can not be. It depends on how aggressive the attacker is. Keep in mind the eye does not affect the body so if you attack the eye and the attacker still has the WILL to do harm, his body is still capable of attacking you.

In order for the eye gouge to be more effective, you need to combine the eye gouge with other movements such as a quick and efficient takedown, that way you will have a chance to escape.

Some attackers may be enraged if they were somehow attacked by their victims so best to do a combination of 2-3 moves to improve your chances of escape.
