It can be yes, but I hand washed for 9 months after my son was born, and after the first two weeks took to washing it in the bath so I could stamp on them. The point is, handwashing the occassional delicate or sweater is fine and you will get it just as clean as a machine, but oh my goodness, handwashing everything (sheets, blankets, doonas and towell included) is some serious hard work, you'll be exhausted by the time you get to rinsing, and wringing them out gives you muscles like a boxer... eeeuw! Go the washing machine!

you can get your clothes much cleaner by hand washing. The washing part is important but to get clothes super clean is the rinse. if you take a bath with your child and he pees in the tube, you get out of the bath, you have pee on you! all the dead skin, the soap, body oils, hair, bacteria, bed bugs? It is all on you! gross. some thing with clothes. when clothes are in a machine it gets a wash and a rinse. check out you clothes in a rinse cycle. see how scary looking the water is. the water will drain and you still have soap in your clothes, not to mention many other things. if you hand wash your clothes you can rinse better and get clothes cleaner.

I hate hand washing. It stretches my clothes out, makes them smell not as fresh and essentially, you just can't get all of the dirt out unless you give them a beating and a whirl! The washing machine is your best option. It has several cycles that run fresh water through your clothes and give 'em a nice work through with suds. I would put it on the gentle cycle to wash anything that says "Hand wash only." That way your clothes don't come out looking like they survived a war, and they will smell better, and all of the stains will come out.
