The mumps vaccine is very effective.  Whether it provides lifelong immunity is questionable.  Since mumps is uncommon today (because of widespread vaccination), a source of natural boosters to maintain immunity is no longer there.  As you get older, your immunity may wane, making you susceptible again.  If you think you may be at risk of contracting mumps, you could ask you doctor to do a mumps antibody titer to see if you are still immune.
