Question:

How efficient are Heat Pumps in Ventilation Units?

I'm considering buying a ventilation unit with a heat pump inside. It's supposed to be better than night storage and convection heating.

The unit is from www.ecoheatpumpdistribution.co.uk.

Who has the knowledge on the efficiency of Heat Pumps please?

  1. a heat pumps cost to operate as compared to gas or resistive heaters depends on outside temperature.  If the outside temp drops below about 50 F  or 10C for a significant amount of time, then gas is cheaper.  At 40 F or 5C, the heat pump will not work and you'll have to resistive electric heat which is expensive.

  2. Not sure about the efficiency from a green point of view but when I used the one on holiday in Greece it certainly warmed up the apartment quickly

  3. It really depends on the medium being used (water or air) and the temperature of that medium.

Extracting heat from warm air is obviously more efficient than from cold air.

The link below provides some Coefficient of Performance (CoP) numbers.
