  1. A gyroscope is a device for measuring or maintaining orientation, based on the principles of angular momentum. The device is a spinning wheel or disk whose axle is free to take any orientation. This orientation changes much less in response to a given external torque than it would without the large angular momentum associated with the gyroscope's high rate of spin. Since external torque is minimized by mounting the device in gimbals, its orientation remains nearly fixed, regardless of any motion of the platform on which it is mounted.

  2. Electrical gyro... Not quite sure what you mean, is it a mechanical gyro with an electrical feed and not a vacuum feed or do you mean a solid state laser ring gyro?

A laser ring gyro works by reflecting a laser beam round a triangle by using semi transparent mirrors. The use of computer software can time the laser between these mirrors and detect movement by the fact that if the laser was fired from x to y and took longer than expected the gyro has moved along line xy towards y. Equally if the time was shorter it would have moved towards x. An equalateral triangle layout is used as the geometry allows measurement longitudinally and rotationally.
