  1. The layout of the classroom has to provide adequate room for students to work. If you do work centers, they need to be situated so that they do not interfere with activities in adjacent areas. Materials need to be stored where they can be accessed by students but also where they are not in the way during other activities. Plan your activities first, then decide their location. Be consistent about placement of materials, including assignments to be turned in. This avoids lost work and missing materials. I find a timer to be useful in making sure that students have a chance to participate in all areas. Music is a good way to start the day-kids respond to music. I also find that having a thought for the day helps kids to focus. I have students write for the first few minutes when they come in the door to help create a mental separation between the chaos of the bus and the need to focus in the classroom. Post rules, but don't have too many. Older students can and should help compose rules for the class. Be consistent, be friendly but also be prepared. That's 90% of the battle.

  2. Are you referring to the classroom environment? If so, then to create stimulation you would want to have lots of visuals with emphasis on vocabulary, anchor charts, student examples, and anything else you can find that would help. The challenge with this being, that a child can easily be distracted. You will need to address this early on, and hopefully the problem won't be too much.
