how am i related to him exactly?

Your grandmother's sister is your grand aunt or great aunt.

Her daughter is first cousin to your mother or dad, and your first cousin once removed.

The son is your second cousin. When you have children and he has children, those children will be third cousins.

Removed is when you go up or down a level, and your parents are up one level. Your grandmother's cousins are your cousins twice removed, and so on.

Going "down" a level, your cousins' children are your cousins once removed, and their grandchildren are your cousins twice removed.

Marrying a cousin (first, second, first once removed . . .) was very common in the USA before 1880 or so. In some counties, if you wanted to marry a white person, it was a cousin or nothing. There is a line in "Gone With the Wind" about it; some family or other "always marries their cousins".

As long as hemophilia or some other genetic disorder doesn't run in your family, you are OK. If you date and break it off because he turns out to be a cad, or you turn out to be unkind, there will be some awkward pauses at family gatherings ever after.

2nd cousins ...it isnt that bad for you to date if ur 2nd cousins...its more of a taboo nowadays if it was ur 1st cousin...but 2nd isnt too bad... although i wouldnt get with my 2nd cousin because that is just too wierd cos i come from quite a close family...
