How exactly do you apply the tape when sheetrocking?

The next process of finishing will be after it is hung, step 2 will be to apply a fairly thin coat of joint compound where the edges are. Put the tape down these seams and use a trowel to set the tape as smoothly as possible in the compound. This will be to stick the tape as flat as possible. After ALL has dried. (no gray spots, just pure white) apply another thinner coat with a wider trowel, allow to dry and repeat this until the joint is undetectable. After all is dry, apply a coat of sheetrock primer. Look for imperfections, if any correct them.

Then would be the time to texture and paint.

I can't use paper tape; I press all the mud out from behind the tape.  I use fiberglass tape with success.  Lay the fiberglass tape over the joint and put the mud on over the tape.  Texture comes after the joints are completely invisible.  There are several ways to texture.  The one I use currently comes out looking like cottage cheese.  I put the mud in a paint pan and use a 9" paint roller and pick up a little mud on nearly evenly on the roller and roll it on the wall.  I wait about 10 to 15 minutes and go over it with a very wide flat sheet rock trowel to squish down the lumps.  I put the roller in the freezer (inside two plastic bags) for use on another day.  When I'm done, I throw the roller away.

The usual procedure is to lay in a fairly thick layer of mud with the wide trowel and then press the tape into the mud and apply another thinner layer on that, and let it all dry.
