How exactly do you use FAFSA money?

I looked at the site and it told me I had an EFC of $0.00 and its great and all, but how exactly do I get the money?

When are you supposed to receive it and in what form is this in?

Is there a site where you can see how to receive your FAFSA money?

  1. Technically, the FAFSA doesn't actually give you any money.  It's a form that tells the schools you apply to what your EFC will be. From that, the financial aid office at the schools to which you apply will determine how much aid for which you're eligible, at which point you'll be awarded with it.  If you have any further questions, though, it's wise to talk to your financial aid counselors at the schools to which you're applying, as they can be very detailed with award breakdowns.

Very likely, the aid will be directly applied to your school account and you'll receive no refund in cash, so it's just applied to your tuition, dorms, etc.

  2. no the money will be sent directly to your college. You do not recieve any of it.

  3. It depends on the costs to attend a particular school and whether you're enrolled full or part time. You're only supposed to use it for things directly involved with education, so don't run off and buy a car with it, but getting a graphing calculator is ok.

At the school I attended the check wasn't dispersed until after you bought your books and registered for classes. I got my check in the mail about two weeks after late registration ended. Should be about the same for all schools.

  4. This book has a flo chart of the whole "fin aid process" somewhere in the beginning.  I suggest you read it from cover to cover. 99% of all fin aid questions can be found here.

Your money will be sent to the school to pay for your fees, tuition, dorm, books, everything.  IF (and I say if) you get enough to cover the cost of everything then you will be issued the difference.  This usually doesn't occur until a few weeks into the semester... sometimes even longer depending on how late you did your fafsa.  Use it to pay for gas, supplies, computer,

An EFC is good, it means you are poor and will hopefully get the most free money they have to offer.  Full Pell grant is 4731 next year (half in the fall and half in the spring) if you attend full time and meet about a million other qualifications.  You will prob also be offered work study and student loans if you indicated you needed them.
