  1. Good God, I thought Yale was for really smart people?  Guess not.  Coming from an artist, and knowing other artists, we can be a little weird but this really takes the cake.  Its not creative its just psychotic, almost wondering if she was using hallucinogens or other drugs to even think up something like that.  I personally would not call it art, or claim she is an artist.  I think thats more of an attention w.ho.re. and what we call a sh.it. starter.   They just love the drama, and like to use the artist title as an excuse to take something obviously wrong and unmoral and call it art, to still pass it off in some exhibit.

  2. i don't think it is.

  3. i think it is an irresponsible form of artistic expression. in some cases, art is hard for me to understand but this one takes the cake.

  4. It's not a cry for help, it's a cry for publicity.  She made no point on the abortion issue, she only proved that she could stir people up.  Yes, if you are willing to be disgusting enough, you can stir people up.  So what have you proved?

    She's not an artist, she's a maniac.

  5. it's a mockery of art.  i don't think it's a cry for help, it's an ego trip and a circus act.

  6. We really don't know the truth, do we?

If this person faked the whole thing--the photos were stage blood or even menstrual blood--then it's really no different than a slasher movie, don't you see?  I personally don't like art that has lots of blood in it--I used to work in a hospital and those films always reminded me of work--but it's to the taste of some people.  I would find it has a lot in common with most Mel Gibson movies.

On the other hand, if she really induced abortion or bleeding, she's taking a big risk with her own health and that's cause for concern.  Society does permit people to take risks with their own health--look up the career of Chris Burden, whose art included getting himself shot with a rifle in a gallery and other extreme acts of personal discomfort and peril.  I'd prefer that artists not do that sort of thing, but it's an issue for their friends and teachers to address.

All in all, I intend to judge not--lest I be judged.

  7. Because she said it was. That is the only premise for anything to be called art. My wife is a curator and professor and I make fun of her all the time for the highbrow lingo that describes art. When it takes a wall of text to explain it ... then it is no where near art... NEA should be pillaged and burned.

  8. I find this quite disturbing.

I'm a person that feels that if someone intends something to be art, it is generally art. This, however, crosses the line for me. Even if was faked, her attempt was to go beyond shocking people (shock can be an acceptable motivation for art). It was disrespectful to an incredible level. It reeks of immaturity and a complete lack of understanding of what art is supposed to be. Even when art shocks, it should also inspire on some level.

But that is my very non-artist opinion.

  9. Many people in the postmodern world have lost sight of or have attempted to change the definition of art. People  replace the beautiful with the ugly and “shocking” and call it “art” (when in actually I can make an argument that it is anti-art). All I have to is...whatever. But if art empresses the psyche of a person and a society, something around the lines are “we’re doomed” seems in order.

As for the girl...she does need help.  Furthermore, if she really did do what claims, her "art" should be destroyed and not exhibited.
