  1. Hydrogen gas is the most abundant item in the Universe.  The Sun is made of Hydrogen.  It shouldn't be too expensive...

  2. The minimum cost of Hydrogen Gas produced through electrolysis of water will be the cost of the energy to produce it. This is actually a pretty huge amount of power. Industry doesn't tend to use this method to create hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen gas that you buy in industry comes from crude oil. I'd guess it's probably more expensive than natural gas or propane.

  3. Nearly all hydrogen is produced from natural gas so it's more expensive than that fuel. You can produce it from water by a process of electrolysis but that's very inefficient so it wouldn't be cost-effective. Then you need to put that gas to use and it's very combustible as a search for the Hindenburg will show. You can use it in a fuel cell or burn it directly but it's very bulky in a gaseous state and it's even more dangerous in it's liquid state since it requires such low temperatures (−423.17 °F).

It's hard to see how hydrogen could become a major energy source when it's not an energy source at all, just a storage medium for energy. So it's less efficient than a battery but does pretty much the same thing. Once we can use fusion to fuse hydrogen into helium that will change but that won't happen anytime soon. That's what the sun uses for fuel but we can't duplicate that long enough to be useful.
