A rule of thumb i heard was that your car should be worth 6 months of your income.  If it is only 1 month of income, you deserve better. If it equal to a years income you cannot afford it.  Seems to worm pretty well, except in the case of the extremely wealthy or extremely poor.

Whatever you are willing to spend and can afford. Our next-door neighbor is an ER doctor who makes $300,000 a year and drives a 6 year-old Ford Explorer. I know a flight attendant who managed to save up to buy a brand-new Jaguar. It all depends on how important having a nice car is to you.
