heres the deal, i need money to pay for summer school and my mom is telling me to get a loan. and of course the three main types of loans require a FAFSA, i filed one about four years ago and i was denied because my dad makes a decent amount of money. i know they are basing this off the taxes information of both me and my parents, point is my mom is trying to convince me to lie on the form and i'm not going to do it because i am very sure they will do the background check to see if i am lying, correct?

  1. no you shouldn't lie its wrong, they will find out.  There are ways of qualifying without lying.  Yes ms. teal you have to count both parents money and everybody else in the house.

  2. You can qualify for a federal student loan no matter what your parents income is.  You have no need to lie on your fafsa.  Yes, they check it.  Four years ago you were probably denied a grant, and also indicated you were not interested in a student loan.  Do a federal loan.  They have the better interest rates.  Private student loans have higher interest rates and will require a cosigner or you to pass a credit check (which you will not do if you don't have a full time job).

  3. I would not recommend that.  You are going to have to provide their social security numbers and that info is pretty easy for FAFSA to check, after all they are part of the federal govt just like the IRS.  If you post this question during the daytime you will probably get a very knowledgeable answer from found-1, seems she works in the field of fin aid

  4. yeah, dont lie. It can only make matters worse.

However, I thought you only had to report one of your parents income, not both. Im not 100% on this, but its worth looking into.
