Hello. I am going on a cruise with my friends and family for a senior trip this June, and I was wondering how fancy do I have to dress. I was just thinking a white button up with a sweater vest and tie and khakis. Would this be good enough? By the way, the cruise is for 4 nights.

  1. I have been on many cruises and here's my advice for you.  First of all the formal nights on cruise ships are 'REQUESTED ATTIRE" not required.  Then the minimum that cruise lines ask of you for dress after 6:00 PM is "sports or resort casual".  That's attire that you would expect a person in a business office to wear, shirt with a collar and slacks for men and dress or skirt and blouse for women.  As long as you are sports casual for dinner you will be OK.  Most people do dress up, except on NCL cruise ships, and when they do its any and everything from a tux to a suit and tie to sports casual.

Your planned attire will be just fine.  You will not be denied access to the dining room or any other place dressed as you have planned.  On our cruises we usually dress tux/gown formal, but then take it off after dinner and a photo and go back to casual.

  2. Your travel agent should be able to make suggestions. We had light-weight suits and ties for formal dinners and your described outfit for other dinners, but then again it was a 7-day cruise.

  3. Nothing fancy as a tux or suit. I've cruised many times and saw that people (cruise line) are ok with khakis and a tie.

  4. Some do suits and ties, some do tuxedos - if you don't have one, dont bother renting one - just have a nice suit ready with a tie and you'll fit right in.

  5. I think that sounds fine - you'll see a lot of variation in dress, from more casual to people in tuxes.
