  1. It depends on how old your house is. Some are on 18 inch centers. You would be wise to purchase a stud finder.Older homes are even closer.

  2. Typically they are 16 inches on center.  To put a window in, you need to understand framing; it's not as simple as cutting a hole and popping a window in.  You need to put in a header, cripple studs/jack studs, etc.  If you don't, your wall can sag and your window will not function properly.  Below is a link to help you out a bit.

  3. With all due respect to all, ALMOST in this sense, makes no sense. This isn't lobbing hand grenades.

In minor fractions a 2 x 4 is 1  3/4 inches. Given the vaugeness of 16 inch on center answers, you can assume to do the math considering the distance between a decent framing job.

STUD FINDERS,,,sigh, such handy gadgets, so many buy, try to find  drywall screws or nails in the framing? Magnets have never been known to work on wooden studs

Tap a knuckle on the wall in the area, even for a general sense, then tap a finish nail.

Hopefully you realize that a window between tuds is likely a custom issue? In any case you'll have drywall repair  after the fact, and to add a window dictates cutting through siding, finishing, adding horizontals for bracing.

Then consider the window framing itself, subtracting those fractions

  4. The advise to get a stud finder is really good.

A window can be installed - not something for a "newbie" to attempt because you'll be cutting into a weight bearing wall...not good without proper framing - it will impair the structure.

Studs, these days, are on 16" centers in most homes - there are exceptions to this.

    Hope this helps!

  5. If you don't know that, don't attempt the job.  Your experience level is way too limited.

  6. Generally most walls are on 16" centers, which means there's about 14" of space between the 2x4 studs (which are more like 1.5" x 3.5"). You could stick a window in between the studs without doing all the header stuff, but I don't think I'd recommend it, unless you only need a tiny window. By the time your frame the window, etc., you'll have about 10-11" of actual window space. Maybe you can put in a couple of port holes?

  7. Not to be sarcastic, but if you need to ask this question, you probably shouldn't be installing a window. Not really a job for a Novice.

  8. Walls and floors are on 16" centers.Temporary buildings can be on 24" in.oc.Rafters and roofs are usely on 24"oc.Thats number 2 yellow pine.
