  1. you are excactly right. if your thumb just barely touches your thumb, it is the right size grip. if you really want to be sure though, ask a tennis coach or other experienced player. but if your pinky touches the tip of your thumb and it is comftorable, it's the right size

  2. i think the "L" stands for "Level" in sense of defining the size of the grip, which correlates with the circumference of the grip in inches (L1 = 4 1/8 in., L2 = 4 1/4 in., L3 = 4 3/8 in and so on). take a look at the bottom cap of your racquet grip and you should be able to see some chiseled marking telling the size of the grip (sometimes without "L", like only "2 - 4 1/4" or "1 - 4 1/8" etc.

when selecting the grip size, try to grip the handle. if you can insert an index finger between your base of thumb and your other fingertips, it should be the right grip for you. so basically your fingers and the base of thumb should be an index width apart.

just in case you find yourself in-between two sizes of grip (e.g. between L1 and L2), it is suggested that you pick the smaller one and later you can wrap a layer of overgrip over the handle to make the grip size bigger. hope it helps :)
