How far are the sightseeing locations from the Celebrity Cruise dock in Cornwall England?

We are wondering if we will be able to walk off of the ship and into the city or if we will have to take a taxi. The cruise also offers excusrsions where you are taken around on tour buses but we would prefer to do it ourselves. We just want to do some sightseeing. What do you advise? Are the majority of the sights with in 5km of the dock?
