  1. We actually had to take a 6 hour bus ride out to Manuel Antonio National Park.

If you are traveling there, don't stay in San Jose unless you have to go to the airport.

    Some suggestions:

    -Arenal and their hot springs

-Manuel Antonio National Park has the MOST BEAUTIFUL beach that you hike to

-the Caribbean side has some beautiful beaches too but that's an even longer bus ride.  Some people fly.

  2. Distance-wise they are actually quite close. I believe that as the crow flies, it is only about 40 miles or so to the pacific coast.

Getting there though is a different story. In my opinion the best way to go is to fly, all the best beach resorts have local airports within a short 30 minute flight from San Jose. They are pretty good value as well at around $50.

Otherwise you are driving and looking at minimum a 2 hour drive.

    Some rough driving time estimates:

Tamarindo and around - 6 hours

    Jaco - 2.5 hours

    Manuel Antonio - 3.5 hours

MalPais and Santa Teresa - 7 hours

Caribbean beaches (Limon) - 4 hours

See my articles linked below for more information about the different areas of Costa Rica.

  3. I just came from CR. The beaches are about an hour to an hour and a half. I recommend u visit Jaco (good beach and nightlife) . QUEPOS is about an hour from JACO. Also Manuel Antonio is 30 minutes from Quepos. There is a rainforest there (museum) inside there is a pretty good lake. I heard tamarindo is the best place to go. i did not get a chance to go. stay away from San Jose there is alot of traffic and heavy populated. enjoy ---pura vida-------

  4. The closest beach is probably Punteranas,  About 3-3 1/2 hrs by bus.  The fartherest could be upto 7 hours by bus followed by a boat ride

  5. depends what beach... puntarenas is 2hrs away, and jaco is an 1.45 min. this is by car. of course bus is longer

  6. Jaco is the nearest decent beach and it is only slightly further than than Puntarenas,

  7. Central Pacific Beaches by Car;

Punta Leona (1 hour 30 minutes)

Herradura (1 hour 45 minutes) Marriot Los Sueños

    Jaco  2 hours (Many Hotels)

Manuel Antonio (3.5 hours) Many Hotels)

  8. Manuel Antonio is about 55 miles south from San Jose and can be reached by flying Sansa Air ($98.00 per round trip or $118.00 with tax) which takes all of 25 minutes to Quepose and Manuel Antonio Beach is only five minutes away by cab.

If you drive it will take you about five hours.

    Good Luck!

  9. The above answers are accurate. If you rent a car it would cut way down on the time.

    I almost "Baked" in Jaco.
