How far away are the street lines on the high way?

i know its a random question but when your driving it looks like its 5 ft away but when you look across the median to the other side it looks like 20 feet please help!

In the south they are 10 feet away from the road.....

the standard lanes are ten foot  wide..( center line to white line) making a two-lane road twenty feet wide...
