Like cyswxman says, the distance is very small, only about 2.4 miles between Big Diomede Island (Russia) and Little Diomede Island (United States).

Not far at all.  The Bering strait (between Russia and Alaska) separates the two by about 58 miles, and there are two little islands in the strait, the Big and Little Diomede Islands.  Little Diomede Island belongs to the U.S. while Big Diomede Island belongs to Russia.  They are separated by only about 1.2 miles, so technically that is how close Russia is from the U.S.
