  1. my hospital was 20 minutes away....my contractions started at  9:30 in the morning at 10 mins apart....and i left for the hospital at 2:00 pm when they got 5 mins apart....my water didnt break at home, the doctor had to break it.

  2. I guess about 15 minutes?

With my first I laboured at home for 3 days, transferring to the hospital from a homebirth was one of the biggest mistakes of my life.  They gave my son too much of the wrong IV which shut down his kidneys, threatened my constantly.  I basically missed out on the first 5 days of his life and I will never, ever get that back.

With my second labour was fast, less than 8 hours and I had my baby in the bathtub before the midwife could even make it (that's ok I knew she might not)

  3. The hospital I gave birth in is about an hour away (and if there's traffic, it could take 2 hours!).  There is a local hospital also here about 5 minutes away, but I had to go to the one further away because I have a heart condition and needed to go to the hospital that deals with high risk pregnancies.

When my daughter was born, I was in labor for about 4 hours before leaving to the hospital.  There was, happily, no traffic on the highway that day!  My water broke about 20 minutes after we got to the hospital.  My total labor time was about 13 hours.

When my son was born, it was an induced labor.  So I was already at the hospital before labor began!  Total labor time was about 6 hours  :)

  4. I live about 12 miles from the hospital.

My water broke at home but I wasn't contracting. I had to be induced at the hospital

  5. My water broke and contractions started immediately. Because my baby was breech, we went to the hospital immediatly. It took 15 minutes to get there. I was 4 cm dilated when we got there.

  6. This last time (with #4)-

    about 1 1/4 miles.

Which is a good thing, since I woke up with my first real contraction at 11:49 p.m, it was one of the most wrenching contraction I've ever had with any of my children, I KNEW it was labor and would be quick- the midwife broke my water at 12:24 (I had had prodromal labor for days, but little progress), and about four contractions later he was born at 12:37 p.m.

I ended up hemorrhaging from the rapidity of the labor; took 48 minutes to have him, and over two hours to control the bleeding. My midwife told me just today I was within three minutes of a hysterectomy when it finally slowed, the OR was ready and waiting for me.

I always waited at home as long as possible (and in fact if home births weren't' essentially illegal in my state I would have done it with the first baby- Now I know why they are illegal- had I been at home, I would most likely have died) but after that...I'll want to be at the hospital or birth center in a more timely manner next time, if there is a next time.

  7. The hospital we went to was about a 25 minute drive away. My water broke at home, but the contractions didn't start until almost an hour later.  I had no signs or symptoms at all! I just stood up to get something and my water broke. I had no clue it was going to happen. I was 39 weeks to the day, and fully expected to be waiting at least another week.....     but like I said, it broke at home, the contractions started an hour later when we were already at the hospital.

  8. The hospital is a 45 minute drive from my house and we left once my contractions got to about 5 minutes apart.

By the time we reached the hospital though, I was already 7 cm dialated and within a few more minutes - I was a 10 cm and pushing!

My doctor broke my waters once I got to the hospital because he could already see my son's head being born and my water was still intact!

If your hospital is pretty far away, I'd go early if I were you! I didn't have time to do anything once I got to the hospital because I was so far along, I didn't even have time to take a urine specimen for them! =O

Just be careful and leave before the contractions get too far apart, especially if you want pain medication. I was so far along, I didn't even have time for medication and gave birth fully natural -- it hurt like h3ll, but that's what I wanted all along. =)

If you want meds or an epidural, arrive early rather than later though!

Good luck on your labor! <3

  9. I'm pregnant with my first and I live 45 minutes away from the hospital. I am TERRIFIED that I'm not going to make it in time! But, my doctor swears to me that it'll be ok and I won't deliver my baby in my car. ;o)

  10. baby #1 about 20 min away

baby #2 about 2 min away

baby #3 about 10 min away

  11. Luckily the hospital from my house is only 3 minutes.  I went into labor the morning of 3-14-08 and didn't leave for the hospital until 2:30Am on 3-15-08.  I couldn't take the pains anymore. I had my daughter at 8:53 pm They had to break my water at the hospital.  My baby never dropped also!

  12. The hospital was about a 20 minute drive away. I was at home having contractions but that was two weeks before my due date. So I called my doctor and he said it was probably Braxton hicks contractions , so he told me to take a bath and than lie on my left side. So I did, and I called him back an hour later telling him the contractions were getting stronger, so I went to the hospital and when the doctor checked me, I was 7 cm dialated and I had my daughter two hours later. And the doctor had to break my water.

  13. It was a ten minute ride. They had to break my water and i had contractions that morning and i didn't go to the hospital until 6:30pm. I had my baby at 6:35 the following morning.

  14. about 5 miles.

they were a minute and a half apart.  i finally left husband at home doing his hair.

    no.

  15. I don't like hospitals.  We prepared for a home birth.  The hospital was 5 minutes away in an ambulance if anything went wrong.  However, all doctors gave me the go ahead.  Water broke on the beach, hung out there for another hour or so.  Went home, had another 2 hours labor.  Went off without a hitch.
