Question:

How far back would I have to hang a projector to end up with about an 80" screen?

The ceiling height is 10ft, if that matters. If you could tell me the math behind your madness that'd be awsome! Thanks!

  1. the best bet is your projector manual there have to be a page where you find your screen size and it tell you how far to install the projector.

when installing the projector avoid to put it too close to the ceiling to avoid tilting down the projector even if the projector have vertical lens shift.

    avoid this

better use a mount with a long arm like this.

if you dont have your instruction manual you can use the link that the others users have post like this one:

This will answer your question if the model in in their drop down menu.

The projector itself will determine the distance needed for your quest. Each projector is unique in it's requirement for distance to screen size ratios.

    Good Luck!

  3. Miguel and Woofer have provided an answer to your specific question (and I highly recommend the calulator they suggest) ... but it's only part of the information you need.

The link below provides a way of determining the right size of screen for the viewing distance (or the converse). There is no RIGHT answer since preferences vary, but you should consider the issues the link defines.

In addition you need to consider the type of projector to determine the minimum distance you should plan to sit from the screen to be sure you won't see the pixel structure/screen door effect (usually, 1.0 >> 2.0x screen size, but determined by projector characteristics). This is usually discussed in reviews either at projectorcentral.com or at the 2nd link below.

At 80" ceiling height isn't likely an issue, but it can be important if you want a large screen, particularly if it's 4:3 format rather than widescreen. The reason is that as screen size increases the height requirements do too, and when combined with considerations about proper screen height (so your eye when sitting in the normal viewing position is 1/3 to 1/2 way up the screen), ceilings can become a limitation.

So ... you need to know:

    - room dimensions

    - projector type and model

    - screen aspect ratio and size

to determine the proper location for the projector, screen and seating. And everything is interdependent.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Here is a link to what all the pros use for figuring that out. Select your brand then model. The calculator will then give you a range. You can then pick your size and the calculator will tell you a range of distance the projector can be.
