How far can I cut back my bushes?

The bushes in my front yard are pretty big but dead underneath. I want to cut them down but i'm scared if I prune them too much (all the way to the dead looking branches) they won't grow back. Anyone know?

  1. do you know what kind of bushes they are?.... you need to know, cuz there's some that will respond well to heavy pruning and some that will not.... some cannot put out new green where the stems look bare or browned.... like  some evergreens.... some you can cut to the ground and they'll bounce back with all new growth... like privets..... find out what you have and then research it on the web... or come back here with the name and someone will help, I'm sure....

  2. Prune away! They aren't dead....just not getting enough sunlight. They will come back even better,

  3. I would get underneath the bushes and cut off the dead branches and then go ahead and prune them, they will grow back.  You do not say what type of bushes you want to prune but you should be alright with cutting them back, do not cut to the area underneath where you cut off the dead branches.
