How far can a Bullroarer be heard from?

The bullroarer is a powerful noisemaker, that can travel for miles.

As a kid, I lived up in the Territory on a cattle station, and the kids next door (house was 17km away) had one. They would crank it up in the mornings at 6am to say "g'day", and I could hear it clearly. Mind you, I don't think you would hear it for 1km in the city on a busy day.
