Question:

How far can a lion pee?

A friend of mine swears a lion peed on her from 60 feet away when she was a kid. I call BS, but apparently a lion's urinary capabilities are not well documented on this interweb thing. Thanks!

  1. Jee I dont know the Answer of your Question.

  2. Male lions will spray urine to mark their territory.

Lions kept in cages for display purposes seem to develop a warped sense of entertainment as I have seen them spray zoo patrons through the bars for no apparent reason... and if the air currents are right, I can see someone standing 60 feet away getting some of the substance on them.  (ewww)  - it is not like a stream of urine but more like an aerosol spray.. ;-)

  3. I spent 7 years working with lions, tigers and other big cats at a rescue (take a look at my icon). The cats definitely sprayed people on purpose on a daily basis. They could hit you easily from anywhere up to 10 feet away. The only way your friend could have been hit from 60 feet away is if there was a tiny hurricane that hit at just the right moment to send the less than 3 ounces of liquid in her direction. The cats sprayed people so often we always warned volunteers and visitors about getting too close to the cages and to watch if the cats turned their backsides towards them. One of my friends wanted to see the cats  so I brought her to the facility and told her the rules, but she didn't listen, got too close to my lions enclosure and didn't pay attention to him turning around and got sprayed in the face. So I gave her a framed picture of my lion's butt for Christmas. :)

  4. Maybe the lion was on a cliff.

  5. 60 feet? Not likely! They can certainly spray their urine a few feet - four or five, say - but there's no way it could go 60 feet. Like all cats, lions spray their urine around their territory to declare their ownership of it - they may inadvertantly hit people who are standing in the line of fire, as it were, but they're not intentionally trying to pee on you. Though I did once work with a tiger who seemed to take delight in peeing on the windows of his enclosure seconds after I'd cleaned them!
