i know that water isnt too far, but like 15 meters would be pushing it.

ive seen some pretty crazy videos of snowboarders and ski'ers falling much further (like 10-20 floor apartment building heights) and they seem to be okay even if they land on their backs.

i imagine it would depend on the type of snow, and i could probably estimate better than most people, so im really only asking for people with their own actual experiences of falling large distances into snow (snowboarders and skiers) and such, unless someone actually has a website reference

  1. what she said

  2. Most of the videos you see are with professional riders who practice for these extreme stunts for weeks before the film is finalized.  The very best are smart enough to walk away unless the conditions for the stunt are perfect. The stunt may be practiced a thousand times before the final film cut is shown.  None of these professionals will risk their lives without every precaution in advance.

A 10 foot drop is my limit, and it was not intentional.  Fortunately the landing was on firm snow not deep grabby stuff. I skied away with just a loss of breath.  Even the movie stunts you see are carefully planned for visual effects and safety.

  3. i would say that it depends on how much powder there is to land in and how powdery it is to cushion you.

  4. It all depends on how you fall, how you land, how soft the snow is, how deep the snow is, how steep the landing is, how you roll.

Sometimes people fall just right, land just right, into just the right conditions, and walk from a crazy fall.  Sometimes people don't fall that crazy far but end up dying.  There is no magic number.

Most of the time when people drop things, unless they have video of it, or people who actually saw them, they usually end up exaggerating a lot about how far they dropped, so I would take any answer you get with a grain of salt.  Very few people actually have enough experiance to properly guess what they dropped.

I have fallen 20 feet into powder and was just fine, but that's not that far.  I've seen someone overshoot something and fall about 50 feet to flat, and he walked, but his day was over.  He also fractured a couple ribs and was coughing up blood.
