  1. With a DSLR it depends which interchangeable lens you have on the camera.

  2. If you are buying an DSLR camera (which the D40x is) then you can zoom in as close as you want...depending on what type of lense you have bought. Do your research b/c some of those lenses are extremely expensive.

  3. As the other poster stated, it depends on the lens that you buy for it.

  4. Do a little more research on Cameras.  The beauty of the SLR is they have SO MANY possibilities. From playing with how much light you let in to slowing down the exposure.  You have control over everything once you get to know how to use it.  You also have control over how powerful you want your zoom to be by buying the right zoom lens.  You can also get different filters for the lens to add effects.

The Nikon is a good camera it can be even better if you put time into learning it inside and out and buy different lens.

Look at all the lens.  Ranging from 6"-70'  the high the mm is the more power the zoom is.  Like a 70-300mm is going to zoom more then a 28-135mm.

  5. If you want to use just one lens, the Nikon 18-200 mm VR zooms the over the longest range ... the 100-400 mm the furthest.
