Does anyone know how far I would have to dig to reach water in Indiana and Tennessee? Or where I might be able to find that information? I've been searching and cannot seem to find anything on it...Thanks!

  1. It will depend where you are digging. Some areas will have the water table fairly close to the surface whereas other areas it will be quite deep. All the info I found has to do with wells however if you got a shovel and began to dig my bet is you might hit some water within 4-6 feet maybe a bit deeper but it wouldn't be good clean drinking water. Again, it will depend on the water table in your area.

But here is what I found on wells for safe drinking water.

Around Zionsville, Boone County, Indiana, "the majority of the private water supply wells ... are deeper than 100 feet."

In Wells County: "The few wells completed in the Till

Veneer Aquifer System in this county range from 30 to 56 feet deep."

Farm wells pg. 31: "The wells are set at depths ranging from 20 to 150 feet,..."

I found this article and I thought that this one sentence seemed to sum things up.

"In many communities, ample water is found by 300 feet. Most wells for household use range from 100 to 500 feet deep, but a few are over 1,000 feet deep."

    In Tennessee:

"The Water Facility utilizes four deep wells to draw water from the Memphis Sands Aquifer at an average depth of about 525 feet."

    http://www.covingtontn.com/Departments/W...

Memphis, — "city is supplied with water from more than eighty artesian wells, having an average depth of about 400 ft. "

That's about it. I can understand why you had difficulty finding information - there isn't much out there!
