  1. Hello,

I usually start with the first six feathers. The bird should glide down to the floor and not drop like a rock.

You have to be very careful of blood feathers though. You definitely don't want to accidentally clip one of those.

Your vet or even some pet stores that sell birds can help you learn this process.

  2. Do not listen to anybody who says that clipping birds' wings is cruel, because it isn't!!!  The only time it is cruel is if you clip it too far or if you don't clip it at all!!!

Without their wings clipped, birds can fly into windows, walls, pots of boiling water or food, and simply out into the great unknown.  I am glad that you care enough about your bird to want it to be safe.

This website has good information, and I've always trusted it.

  3. You don't have to clip the wings.  If you don't know what you are doing it could be 'fatal'. If you don't know what you are doing you could clip the blood feather too far down. You see; it depends upon how long the feather is from the 'blood' feather 'part'. If you cut the 'blood tubing' your bird could bleed to death.  Your only timely option is to pull the feather out and put pressure and 'blood stop' on it. Pull the feather out is very stressful for you and your bird. Please, think long and hard; WHY bother, it does not improve their quality of life. Consider leaving them the way they are. Never take them outside and let them out of their cage in a controlled environment. They will come to you if you offer them a special treat. Consider a butterfly net if you need one.

I used to clip the wings and then decided it was a waste of time. There's no reason to.

If you 'must' do it for the sake of doing it; may I suggest you go to your avian vet and have them do it for a small fee.

I was just at Busch Gardens in the Aviary, for example, where all the Lorikeets come and land on you. I noticed that they don't clip any of the birds feathers there.

Even the Amazons and other large parrots are not clipped.

They take wonderful care of all the birds and animals there and they don't even find a need. Even in the Pet Shananigans theater where they have a 50 year old Mealy Amazon! So you shouldn't worry about it.

  4. Why do you want to cut your birds wings????

I in 50.yrs.of keeping and breeding  birds have never and would never advocate cutting a birds wings.!!!!

But if you must and feel that you want them cut .

Open the wing that you wish to cut and from the tip of the primaries cut to-ward the body and remove 2.ins of feather, from each feather.

If you feel that you can-not do this then have a friend or a vet do it.

Remember that it will cause your bird some distress and it is like you having your arm broken.

So please think long and hard about this.
