I have tried calculating the cost of daily commuting to Manchester around 60-65 Mi. And I am wondering how people could justify (money wise) commuting.

  1. I drive from Guildford to Chichester each day and back its an hour each way

  2. I'm in london, find my 40 minute communte tedious but guess we're lucky here if it's less than an hour - I'd rather it was 30 minutes though. £24.30 a week for travel card which I don't resent as much as non-work travel cost eg irregular train travel to see friends places like Devon and Birmingham, which I think is extortionate. I don't run a car so think my travel card - which I use a lot - is ok but wouldn't want it to be anymore.

I used to commute by bike and it improved my quality of life hugely - I'd really recommend it, even if it scares you.

  3. Depends what city you're talking about.  In London as it's so hellish and expensive, I had a 1 hour limit each way, then the more people moved out and out and out the more expensive it got and was no longer worth it, so I upped it to 90 mins, but then again more and more people squashed in London meant an ever expanding commuter belt, so I upped it to 2 hours each way. In the end I felt like I didn't have a life so I moved to Cardiff and now I walk 5 minutes to work and I am in the countryside or coast in 10 mins.  Commuting is my hellish nightmare, I got sucked into it and did it for far too long.  Never never again.

  4. too far

  5. I commute from Ashton to irlam each day. On a good day it takes me 3 buses and a tram at a cost of just under £5 (for the day). It takes me 2 hrs though. On a bad day the cost is the same but if there has been an accident or heavy traffic I'm looking at 3 hrs.

I so need to learn how to drive lol

  6. 5 miles a day round trip, took me a while to find a good job close to where i live.

  7. 35 mins, too far..

  8. I commute 6 feet each way and I walk but it is still tedious.

  9. I take the train... 2 hours each way.  I save approxametly 300 dollars a month. But I sacrifice time with my family. Too much.. too far? Havn't decided yet.

  10. ten minutes drive to work then drive lorries for the next ten hours or so. look at weather the cost is viable to comute as far as you do?

  11. I suppose that some people think it is financially worth commuting to work. I mean if they make more money at a job by commuting to it than working at a job near them. This is just my guess. I think anything over an hour is way too much, personally.

  12. 12 miles each WAY by bus and on foot.  I have no choice if I want to work.  I have got to travel the same distance to go to the Job Centre to sign on.

Fortunately the bus company how operates the route I use has a ticket for passengers who travel regularly (regardless of the distance) £21 for 12 single journeys.

  13. Previous jobs have been anything from 1 hour - 2 hours each way, depending on the traffic and transport connections.

    Arrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhh!

  14. I travel about 15 miles each way. It depends on how much I was getting paid as to how far I would travel!

  15. one hour by subway and bus.

  16. It isn't just about the cost in £££'s you have to consider the time taken too.  Business is business and time is money!

Check what percentage of your salary goes into the commute and how much of your time.  Present this information to HR and suggest something like a raise to cover the cost.  Or a day or two every week, when you can work from home.  Or some assistance in relocating.

    Whatever suits you best.

Compare these costs to the cost of replacing you.

  17. I moved house to be closer to my last job (within 7 miles) then we got taken over & I got made redundant so now I commute 25miles each way (about 40mins)

It's not practicle to keep moving to be close to work unless you stick to renting cuz it doesn't seem possible to stick in one company for many years these days!

    worto.

  18. Not only is it taxing in terms of money, but it's taxing on your health. You endure much more stress when you're stuck in a car on the Freeway, waiting to get to work. I'd say a 30 minute commute should be the limit.

  19. 41 miles each way.......its too effin far dude.
