How far does a water tower have to be from a home or school?

  1. There are no rules about where water towers are placed.  They just have to be close enough to the source to be filled and close enough to the houses to provide adequate flow and pressure.  I have actually worked on water towers where the edge of the vessel on top actually hung over top of the house below me.  The condensation from the steel on a hot day actually dripped on the roof of the house bellow.  I have also painted many tanks on school grounds for the exclusive use of the school.  The only real rule is that the base of the tank must be surrounded by a six foot fence and all of the doors and hatches must be locked for security.  Thats not to say all tanks comply with these rules yet, it was kind of  a nine eleven thing but they are all supposed to comply or at least be taking steps to comply with these rules.
